Dredging – Sediment Removal
The lake has muck – deep muck – in many places, especially on its west end. A sediment removal study was completed in 2021. This was the first step in a long-term project to address navigating Hudson Lake – to ensure lake access difficulties related to accumulated muck on the lakebed are mitigated.
PROJECT DETAILS
In 2021, HLCA applied for and was awarded a grant to do a sediment removal study. Seven sites were identified as potential areas benefiting from sediment removal. After the DNR biologists weighed in, it appeared that only 4 of the sites would most likely receive LARE grant funding. Over the next few years, HLCA applied for and was awarded $220,000 in grants to dredge the public ramp (site 1) and the southern channel (site 4). HLCA secured the 20% match of a more affordable, reduced plan. These efforts began in 2024, and dredging was completed on December 31, 2025. The sediment disposal site will be closed once the material has settled.
HLCA submitted a second sediment removal study grant for 2026. The grant was not awarded. HLCA will reapply in 2027. The north channel and other north shore areas will be targets of the study. HLCA is still required to match 20% of any grant awarded – plans or actual sediment removals. HLCA is seeking larger organizations to help with raising these funds.
PROJECT WORK
Sharing efforts and soliciting input from the community is important for current and subsequent phases of the project. Future sediment removal involves LARE grant application and acceptance; bid solicitation and dredger selection; budgets, securing funding, awarding contracts; and finally, overseeing the projects.
It takes a community to keep Hudson Lake healthy and enjoyable. Anyone interested in working on This PRoject, please reach out to us at info@hlcaindiana.com.
